Enabled by Funding from the British Council in Bogotá, Team Wildscreen led a delegation from the UK to support FICMontañas with their fantastic international film festival in Salento, Colombia from 1st – 8th June 2025.
In collaboration with Charlotte Sawyer, director of Rave on for the Avon and student filmmakers Poppy Moore from Bristol Film School Screenology and Emily Brannigan from UWE’s MA Wildlife Filmmaking course, we delivered a package of film screenings, Q+As and workshops for delegates at the festival in Salento.
Surrounded by stunning mountains, biodiversity and rural Colombian culture, we were given a warm welcome by filmmakers and students hungry to learn more about natural history filmmaking and how to connect their audiences with nature. And we were pleased to find that nature connection was a common theme in films and talks throughout the festival, where the indigenous community led the way in valuing and protecting biodiversity and telling its stories. Rave on for the Avon and shorts from Wildscreen Festival’s Official Selection were well received and found common local ground with their themes of social impact, immersive storytelling and protecting the natural world.
Setting off to local nature reserves in jeeps dripping with delegates, the workshops uncovered personal stories of nature conservation and trained emerging filmmakers to capture footage of wildlife. There was plenty of inspiration – we found diverse butterflies, hummingbirds, ocelot tracks, weird and wonderful spiders and even a sloth and a puma! Our absolute highlight was Nestor, a local wildlife guide and conservationist who inspired us with his hunter redemption story, sense of humour, bird calls and skill with a camera.
By far the stars of the week were the FICMontañas team – Juan Francisco, Andrea, Sylvia and co made magic that was freely accessible for the general public. The people of Salento are truly lucky to have such motivated and engaged festival organisers that just want to share the positive messages of wildlife conservation, social impact and Colombian cinema. We tip our sombreros to them for including us and look forward to finding out where our partnership will take us!
