Programme Sneak Peak
Wildscreen Festival Botswana will feature eight informative panel discussions and masterclasses and three engaging 20-minute lightning talks, aiming to equip you with the tools needed to progress in the industry. Together, they will dive into insightful topics, including:

Participatory Storytelling
Platforming storytellers that seek to include and work with indigenous communities at the heart of their storytelling, within the narrative, alongside the production of, and looking into the future legacy. How can storytellers manage these relationships, making the partnership and participation fair, inclusive, impactful and ethical.

Mastering the Art of Development
How do you turn your idea and story into a killer treatment? What makes a good idea into a great film? And do you come up with a golden idea in the first place? In this session we dig deep into development to get to the root of why some ideas become amazing films and some just don’t cut it.

Pitching, Feedback and Funding
You’ve got the idea, you’ve got the treatment, it’s looking great, what next? How do you take your idea into pitching. How do you apply valuable feedback to hone this even further, where do you take it and how do you secure funding.

Starting Out: Breaking Barriers and Getting Good
Where do you even begin? How do you break into this industry? What are the myths that need debunking, and what are the realities, the good, the bad and the ugly, of working in wildlife filmmaking and natural world storytelling!
Plus, masterclasses delving into craft development such as cinematography, scriptwriting and more.
And not forgetting the return of the festival favourite, the fourth iteration of Wildscreen’s famous, WildPitch! (Entries to which are now closed). Pitchees will stand in front of a live audience, and panel of judges, to pitch their latest and greatest idea with the chance to win cash prizes.

Our Programme
Wildscreen Festival Botswana featured eight informative panel discussions and masterclasses and three engaging 20-minute lightning talks, aiming to equip delegates with the tools needed to progress in the industry. The festival also brought three evening screenings, two of which were African Premieres! Check out some of the programme highlights below, or click on the button for the full programme:

Participatory Filmmaking
Platforming storytellers who centre local communities in their storytelling, both within the narrative and throughout the production process. We explored how these partnerships can be made fair, inclusive, impactful, and ethical, and discussed how government policies and frameworks can serve as guides for responsible and respectful collaboration.

Collaboration Across Continents
We heard from members of the groundbreaking Big Cats 24/7 team – made up of UK based BBC Studios Natural History Unit, and Botswana’s Natural History Filming Unit (NHFU) – as they discussed the successes and learnings from international production collaboration, and how people and programmes benefit from a more equitable approach to natural history filmmaking. This session was kindly sponsored by BBC Natural History Unit.

WildPitch
Six filmmakers had 3 minutes to pitch their wildlife project to a jury of leading international commissioners and senior executives live on stage. Following a 3 minute pitch, the pitchees got immediate feedback from the judges, with the judges then choosing the top three projects.

Development 101
How do you turn your idea and story into a killer treatment? What makes a good idea into a great film? And do you come up with a golden idea in the first place? In this session we dug deep into development to get to the root of why some ideas become amazing films and some just don’t cut it.
