Meet Will – Our Wildscreen ARK Media Research Intern!

1. Tell us a bit about your role!

I am a Media Research Intern, which means I’m helping to find and gather assets for Wildscreen ARK.
2. What’s your background?

I have lived in Bristol my whole life, and have always been interested in wildlife. When I was younger I was very into Steve Backshall’s shows, like Deadly 60, and would want to watch or collect anything with his name on it. My interest in learning about new species and their behaviours has never faded, and when I was around 14 I started getting into photography and soon had a big focus on birds and insects. I will pursue any opportunity that has ties to the natural world and so it was great to be able to find this internship at Wildscreen.
3. What motivates you?

I think it’s very rewarding to know that your effort makes a demonstrable difference. I would say I’m motivated by being able to witness positive changes and advancements that I know I contributed to.
4. What are your career goals?

I am very early on in my career and so am trying to keep an open mind and gather a broad range of experiences before I ever set any concrete goals for myself. But I would love to be able to work closely with the natural world, and continue to experience new things.

5. What’s your favourite story from nature?

I once came across an interesting looking insect displaying some bizarre behaviour, which I later found out to be a sabre wasp. I think they have a fascinating life as they use their ovipositor for a range of things such as drilling wood, paralysing grubs, and then laying eggs.

6. Describe working for Wildscreen in three words!

Insightful, fulfilling, enjoyable.
7. If you could turn into any animal for a day, what would you be and why?

I would definitely want to fly. I would also love to be able to explore far out at sea without coming up for air every minute, so I would choose a gannet.
